New Bill Targets to Check Single-Use Plastics Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The California legislature proposes a bill, aimed at significantly reducing the pollution created by single-use plastic packaging. It suggests that reduction or recycling of 75% of single-use plastic packaging in the state into other materials by the year 2030. In addition, all single-use packaging and products must be recyclable or compostable.

As per the bill, a regulation will come into effect by January 1, 2030, which makes 75% reduction of the waste generated from single-use packaging and priority single-use products. The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery will be authorized to determine the actions that producers may undertake to achieve those requirements.

The Department needs to develop strict criteria to determine whether the packaging or priority single-use products are reusable, recyclable, or compostable. The progress in implementing the provisions of the Act must be reported to the Legislature once in every three years.

The Legislature declared that the U.S. discards approximately 30 million tons of plastic every year.

Meantime, the California Chamber of Commerce raised opposition to the bill, saying that it would turn out to become costly for manufacturers.
