New Advanced Polystyrene Recycling Facility to be Built in Louisiana

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Woodlands, Texas-based polystyrene producer AmSty and Agilyx Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Oslo, Norway-based Agilyx AS have reached an agreement to build a new advanced recycling facility for polystyrene in AmSty’s styrene production facility in St. James, Louisiana.

The proposed advanced recycling facility will have an initial processing capacity of 50-100 tons per day. It will expand the company’s advanced recycling technology already in use at the Regenyx joint venture project in Tigard, Oregon. Currently, the feasibility study for the project is in progress. The timeline for construction and commissioning will be announced at the earliest, said the company press release.

It took almost a decade of hard work towards development of the advanced recycling technology, which the company believes will significantly boost the availability of recycled content for producers. It is time to reach a larger scale, said Tim Stedman, chief executive officer of Agilyx.

Apart from sustainability advantages, polystyrene is particularly advantageous for advanced recycling because it can be ‘unzipped’ back to its original liquid form, by sing 40% less energy than other polymers, said Dr. Randy Pogue, president and chief executive officer of AmSty.

The project will source feedstock with the help from Cyclyx- Agilyx’s feedstock management company.
