New $10M Hamilton Facility Reports Construction Progress

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The construction of new $10 million state-of-the-art recycling facility is in full swing. Nearly a third of the construction is over, said Hamilton’s recycling contractor EnviroWaste. The new material recovery facility is expected to support city’s aim to boost recycling from 29% to 50% by weight. The facility is the first of its kind in Hamilton.

The new 2,155 square metres processing facility is located on Sunshine Avenue in Te Rapa, Hamilton. It will have a capacity to process approximately 8,000 tonnes of unsorted materials. The completion of the plant is due before July 1st, 2020, when Hamilton plans to roll out its new kerbside rubbish and recycling collection service. The commissioning of the plant will create 10 new jobs in the region and open up additional community recycling opportunities.

The specialty plant will employ manual and mechanical sorting techniques to produce bales of paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminium and metals, which will be sent to a secondary processor. It will handle plastics type 1 through 7.

City Waters unit manager Maire Porter noted that the contract with EnviroWaste will provide Hamilton with a leading rubbish and recycling collection service that is better for the environment. It will bring in transformational change to the existing service, by curbing the volume of rubbish that end up in landfills, Porter added.
