Nestle Waters Announces Ambitious Milestone in Recycled Plastic Use

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nestle Waters North America (NWNA) announced that it will use 25% recycled plastic across its domestic U.S. portfolio by 2021. This will quadruple the current use of recycled materials in its packaging. This milestone is part of the company’s ultimate aim to raise recycled content to 50% by 2025.

As part of its efforts to boost recycled content, NWNA has announced its decision to expand its collaboration with Joliette, Canada-based Plastrec, its key supplier. It will partner with other suppliers to boost the use of recycled PET in bottles. Earlier in November, the Stamford, Connecticut-headquartered NWMA had signed a key agreement with rPET supplier CarbonLite, by which the recycler had agreed to build a new facility in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania where NWMA operates two of its bottling facilities.

Fernando Mercé, President and Chief Executive Officer, NWMA stated that the company’s bottles are designed in such a way that they can be collected, recycled and repurposed. By making new bottles out of used ones, the company intends to prove the value of PET plastic, he said. The milestone will help the company play a major role in addressing the nation’s growing recycling challenges, Fernando added.

In addition to the $6 million investment in the Closed Loop Fund, NWMA had recently signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment aimed at eliminating plastic waste and pollution at source.
