Tanzania's E-Waste Volumes Witnessed Rapid Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The National E-Waste Statistics Report, 2019 published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) states that e-waste volumes witnessed dramatic surge in Tanzania over a period of twenty years.

The report notes that the country’s e-waste generation has increased from around 2,000 tonnes in 1998 to nearly 36,000 tonnes in 2017. The per capita e-waste generation has soared from 0.01 kilograms in 1998 to 0.70 kilograms in 2017.

The possession of electric and electronic equipment (EEE) put on the market has more than doubled from 21,692 tonnes in 1998 to 47,504 tonnes in 2017. Also, the per capita EEE put on the market has increased from 0.72 kilograms in 2001 to 0.93 kilograms in 2017. The report finds that large equipment accounted for major share in EEE put on the market.

According to the report, eight in ten households in Tanzania owned mobile phones in 2017. It must be noted that only three in ten households had mobile phones in 2007. The possession of televisions at households too have witnessed tremendous jump from 2.6% in 2001 to almost 24% in 2017.

The enormous amount of e-waste generated from scrapped electrical and electronic equipment tend to pose threat to environment and health, as the country still faces huge shortage of responsible e-waste recycling facilities. Lack of proper e-waste data is yet another challenge, the report says.
