Metal Recycler Poses Threat to School, Alleges Lawsuit

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer announced lawsuit against S&W Atlas Iron and Metal Co. Inc. at 10019 S. Alameda St. It alleged that the facility poses health and safety risks to nearby Jordan High School in South Los Angeles. The complaint by Environmental Justice Unit alleges that the metal recycling facility has become a public nuisance.

The lawsuit alleges that the facility allows for massive scrap metal mountains within 10 feet of the school’s border. This is in violation of the city’s rule which prescribes a buffer space of 50 feet between the facility and the school campus. The facility is also alleged to illegal storage of hazardous materials and generation of fumes and excessive noise. Incidentally, a construction worker at the campus had become sick after inhaling smoke and fumes from the facility.

As per the lawsuit, the school campus is under constant threat of being hit by sharp metal objects emanating from the nearby facility. Out of fear, the school authorities were even forced to cordon off a portion of the athletic field. It alleges that Atlas Iron and Metal Co. Inc. has not taken necessary measures to prevent the threats from endangering the school, despite having adequate time to do so during the pandemic shutdown.
