MDIC Reports Significant Boost in Iron Ore Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest trade statistics published by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil (MDIC) denotes 5.5% surge in exports of iron ore by the country during the month of October this year. The country’s export quantity totaled 37.2 million tonnes (Mt) in October 2018, as compared with the exports of 35.3 million tonnes in the same month a year before.

The agglomerated ore exports by Brazil surged higher by nearly 40% from 2.37 Mt to 3.32 Mt over the previous year. Meantime, the non-agglomerated exports, which accounted for more than 91% of the total Brazilian exports, edged higher by 3% year-on-year to total 33.88 Mt in Oct ’18. The exports of non-agglomerated ore had totaled only 32.89 Mt in October last year.

The top export destination of Brazilian iron ore was China. The exports to China totaled 19.78 Mt, representing more than 53% of the total exports by Brazil during the month. Out of this, non-agglomerated ore exports totaled 19.33 Mt. The exports to China were valued at $1.023 billion at an average export price of $51.7 per tonne. In second place was Malaysia, which received 3.496 million tonnes of iron ore from Brazil. The other key importers were the Netherlands (1.949 Mt), Japan (1.548 Mt) and Portugal (1.399 Mt).

The primary port of export was San Luis (Maranho), which accounted for 18.73 Mt of shipments, followed by Itaguai (Rio de Janeiro) with 9.78 Mt and Victoria (Espirito Santo) with 8.44 Mt.
