Raid Leads to Closure of Illegal Plastic Recycling Facilities in Malaysia

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Following public complaints, the Malaysian government has taken strict action to curb illegal imports of plastic into the country. Raids by authorities have led to shut down of nearly 30 plastic recycling facilities that were operating illegally. According to Yeo Bee Yin, Minister for Energy, Green Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment, all the factory owners have been detained. Further, electricity and water connection to the above facilities were detached.

The Ministry declared that non-recycled plastic wastes will be treated as illegal in the country. Efforts are already underway to bring in further enhancements to the existing Environment Act, the draft of which is expected to be tabled before the Parliament in 2019.

As per estimates, plastic waste exports from the UK to Malaysia more than tripled during Jan-Apr ’18. Following unprecedented surge in plastic imports by the country during the initial six-month period this year, the Malaysian Ministry of Housing and Local Government had revoked permits of as many as 114 plastic waste companies in July for a three-month period. Henceforth, permit allocation procedures will be made more stringent. Also, applicants are required to obtain initial clearance from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in order to apply for permits.

The Ministry noted that a joint committee comprising of officials from various government ministries has been formed to look into further measures to curb illegal imports.
