Malaysia Orders Shut Down of Around 100 Illegal Plastic Waste Recycling Plants

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Malaysian Environment Ministry announced that nearly 100 illegal plastic waste recycling facilities in the country will be shut down during the first quarter of 2019.

While participating in an enforcement drive against illegal plastic recycling plants in the Telok Gong Industrial Estate area, Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysian Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment stated that 97 plants have already been identified. Also, 20 out of the 48 licensed recycling facilities have been cited for non-compliance, she added. She warned that strict action would be taken against licensed facilities who fail to comply with the Environment Quality Act.

The state of Selangor on the west coast has been spotted with largest number of illegal facilities. A total of 61 factories in the state have been cited for illegal operations, mostly from Kuala Langat and Klang parliamentary constituencies. 10 factories each were detected in Kedah and Negeri Sembilan. Apart from that seven were identified in Perak, six in Johor, two in Penang and one in Kelantan.

The government came up with strict controls after dramatic surge in plastic waste exports by other countries to Malaysia during the initial half of 2018. Apart from making new permit allocation stricter, the government had also revoked permits of as many as 114 plastic waste importers. In addition task forces were formed to monitor operations of existing recycling facilities.
