Madras Lumber Company Fined by OSHA for Serious Safety Violations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has fined Madras, Oregon lumber company for serious job safety violations. The fines were imposed on Mid-Columbia Lumber Products following investigation in connection with an accident that took place at the company’s worksite in September last year. The company was fined $8,610.

According to OSHA authorities, the accident happened while the worker tried to put a moving chain back on a conveyor, while it was still operating. The worker’s left hand was dragged into the rotating sprocket, resulting in amputated ring finger and pinky fingertip. In addition, he had to place pins inside his middle and pointer fingers which were crushed in the incident.

OSHA cited six violations of job safety rules. The company had failed to maintain a written safety and health policy. No periodic inspections were conducted to ensure that energy control procedures are followed correctly. No training or necessary machine guards were provided. Mid-Columbia Lumber Products had no mechanism for recording workplace injuries and illnesses. Furthermore, it lacked necessary documenting procedures to control hazardous energy.
