Lumina Copper Reached Agreement at Chile’s Caserones Mine

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Minera Lumina Copper Chile announced that it has reached an agreement with the striking Lumina Union, thus ending the month-long strike at Chile’s Caserones mine. The new collective bargaining agreement will be valid for a period of three years.

The workers belonging to the union had initiated strike action in the beginning of August, after the collective wage negotiations and the government-led mediation talks failed to produce positive result. The miner had stated the decision by the union as unfortunate, as it believed that it had put forth a competitive offer, compared to mines of greater output. Incidentally, Caserones is one among the smaller copper mines in Chile, recording an output of 126,972 tons of copper during the previous year.

Japan’s JX Nippon Copper, which controls the mine, noted that 98% of the members of the Lumina workers’ union voted in favour of the latest offer. The new contract was signed Saturday, it said.

In a statement, the company appreciated the efforts made by the National Labour Directorate. It will now focus on a safe return to work, it said.

Caserones is an open pit copper mine, with an estimated life of 28 years, during which it anticipates cumulative production of 3,141 million tonnes of fine copper in concentrates.
