Logan City Council Okays Plastic Bag Ban

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Logan City Council approved Tuesday the ordinance banning use of single-use plastic bags by a 3-2 vote. It has thus become the third Utah city to enact such ban after Park City and Moab.

The Ordinance No. 19-24 noted that disposable plastic bags increases litter and adversely impact wildlife, water quality and landfill operations. In addition, they negatively impact recycling equipment.

The ban is applicable to all bags made from either non-compostable plastic or compostable plastic that is less than 2.25 mil in thickness. However, it exempts certain categories of bags such as those provided by pharmacists to contain prescription drugs, newspaper bags, door hanger bags, laundry-dry cleaning bags, disposable paper bags and bags used inside retail stores to pack produce and frozen food, nuts, grains, candy etc., and the ones used to wrap flowers and potted plants.

Violators of the ban will be liable for a fine of up to $250 for the first violation following a written warning within a one-year period. Second and each subsequent violation within a one-year period will be fined up to $500.
