Lincoln Park Metal Shredder Announces Restart of Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): General Iron Industries announced that it would soon resume Lincoln Park metal shredding operations. The last round of inspections by the concerned city departments is expected to take place in the next few days. The city authorities had ordered shutdown of the facility following two massive explosions during the month of May this year, in connection with a new piece of pollution control equipment installed at the facility last year.

Announcing the decision during the recent meeting of residents which took place in the town hall, Dr. Allison Arwady, head of the city’s public health department noted that Lincoln Park facility could resume normal operations further to evaluation by it, the fire department and the department of buildings. The new rules for large recycling facilities operated within the city of Chicago will not apply to the facility until it relocates to the East Side neighbourhood, as agreed before.

Meantime, Ald. Brian Hopkins, whose 2nd Ward is home to the metal recycler, said that the reopening of the facility is a final insult to the community. Operating under the old rules could potentially result in emission of toxic fumes, smells and odors.

However, General Iron claimed that it has already made necessary fixes based on the recommendations by the independent consultant appointed to investigate the explosions.
