SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Li-Cycle Holdings Corp., a leading lithium-ion battery recycler in North America, announced that its CEO and co-founder, Ajay Kochhar, recently provided expert insights before the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. The hearing, titled “Improving Capacity for Critical Mineral Recovery through Electronic Waste Recycling and Reuse,” focused on electronic waste (e-waste) and solutions for recycling and reusing batteries in the transition to clean energy.
During the hearing, Mr. Kochhar discussed several important topics. He highlighted Li-Cycle’s Spoke & Hub Technologies, which achieve up to a 95% recycling efficiency rate and return critical materials from lithium-ion batteries and battery manufacturing scrap back to the supply chain. He emphasized the need for environmentally friendly recycling solutions, especially as the demand for post-processing and resource recovery is expected to outstrip capacity in North America.
Mr. Kochhar also emphasized the significant benefits of lithium-ion battery recycling for supporting a domestic battery supply chain and addressing e-waste. He suggested key policy initiatives that can support the emerging lithium-ion battery recycling industry, such as minimum requirements for recycled content in domestically produced batteries and clear regulations on the movement of batteries and black mass.
Li-Cycle’s CEO expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the company’s perspective and commended the committee for addressing these important issues. He emphasized the importance of increasing awareness of recycling solutions and establishing policies and incentives to support environmentally friendly recyclers.
Li-Cycle Holdings Corp. is a leading global lithium-ion battery resource recovery company and the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America. The company uses innovative and sustainable technologies to provide a safe, scalable, and customer-centric solution for recycling different types of lithium-ion batteries. Li-Cycle aims to create a closed-loop battery supply chain for a clean energy future.
