Liberty Steel Steers New Research Project to Transform Britain’s Steel Sector

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Liberty Steel Group has announced that it will play a key role in the newly announced £35 million research network, aimed at transforming Britain’s steel sector. The company will ensure co-operation between university researchers and steel makers within the U.K to transform the entire UK steel supply chain.

The network called SUSTAIN is led by researchers at Swansea University and is partnered by the universities of Sheffield and Warwick. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council will make necessary investment to the program. The steel producers across the UK as well as representatives from the entire manufacturing sector will be part of the co-ordinated research initiative.

The work will concentrate on zero-waste iron and steelmaking and smart steel processing. Its work aims to make the entire steel supply chain cleaner, greener and smarter and more responsive to changing customer needs. It targets to increase steel sector productivity by 15%, boost industry jobs to 35,000 and double the steel manufacturer’s gross value added (GVA) by 2030.

Dr Simon Pike, Technical Director, Liberty expressed pride in being involved with the flagship research programme that is sure to make Britain a leader in the global steel industry. The initiative fits well with the company’s GREENSTEEL vision, he said. Liberty looks forward to working with leading scientists and engineers across the country to make SUSTAIN a big success, he added.
