Liberty Steel Group Declares £60M Investment in New Powder Metals Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.K.-based steel conglomerate Liberty Group announced launch of multi-million project aimed at developing new generation of powder metals. The project is partly funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority.

The new development facility at the Materials Processing Institute on Teesside will feature the latest vacuum induction atomizer, which is expected to be commissioned this year itself. The powder metals from the facility are likely to be used for multiple applications in various markets including aerospace, automotive, energy and industrial equipment.

Liberty Group has already partnered with Materials Processing Institute and Atomising Systems Ltd (ASL) towards creation of new range of powder alloys, used for 3D printing of precision components. The initial project costs £10 million, which will be later upgraded to a full-fledged manufacturing facility in Teesside with additional spending of approximately £50 million. Incidentally, estimates suggest that the global powder metals market is valued at around £8 billion per annum.

Dr Simon Pike, Liberty’s technical director termed the project as a significant step forward for the international metals industry. The project will help the company to develop new generation of powder alloys with finer grains and better mechanical properties so as to make them ideal for 3D printing. The company will strive hard to unlock similar exciting opportunities for advanced industries in future, he added.
