SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The government authorities have sealed off the last sawmill in Hong Kong. The officials from the Lands Department and the Agriculture and Fisheries and Conservation Department were accompanied by police when they shut down the 75-year old Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber. The sawmill site still has approximately 700 tonnes of wood, in addition to machinery.

The authorities had set a final deadline of September 13th, but the company had stated that it requires more time to properly dispose of the remaining timber and sell the machinery. The sawmill director Wong Hung-kuen was notified of the shutdown yesterday morning. However, neither he nor the workers were allowed by authorities to enter the premises. The utilities at the premises too were cut off.
The company was notified more than two years before that they will have to vacate in order to give way to the Northern metropolis development. The authorities intend to develop the region into a IT hub that could create thousands of new job opportunities. The large piles of wood and the old machinery in the mill will now be handed over to a recycling company.
Many other sawmills had either shut operations or relocated to the mainland, when Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber had managed to survive. With this, the last sawmill in Hong Kong too has closed down.
