'Keep Bay Area Beautiful' E-Waste Collection Surpassed 20,000 Pounds

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The organization founded by a Fremont Irvington High School junior has collected 20,000 pounds of electronic waste during the previous year. Nithu Carthikeyan had started own firm after being inspired by a school project on collection and recycling of e-waste.

The collection of huge quantities of electronic waste was achieved through personal pick-ups and drop-off drives at local libraries and parks, arranged through ‘Keep Bay Area Beautiful’ website. The program witnessed tremendous participation of residents. Consequently, donation boxes at these locations were seen overflowing with discarded items.

Functional parts of the collected electronics were sold online and the proceeds from such sales were being donated to House of Grace- a shelter for homeless people in San Jose.

According to Carthikeyan, the success of his program is mainly attributed to the collective effort by the community. He urged the residents to realize the threats posed by improper recycling of e-waste, as much of the discarded waste ends up in developing countries, where they are handled using primitive recycling techniques, thereby leading to environmental pollution. The younger generation has an important role to play in protecting the environment, by making best use of technology available with them, he added.
