Jay, Maine Paper Mill, Hit by Massive Blast, Announces 51 Layoffs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pixelle Specialty Solutions the owner of the Androscoggin paper mill in Jay, Maine announced its decision to lay off 51 more workers at the mill facility. This brings the total number of employees affected since the mill explosion in April this year to 110.

The mill had lost its pulp operations in the devastating blast that damaged the digester part of the mill, sending debris and slurry of chemicals on to nearby cars and buildings. Nearly 200 out of the total 500 workers were at the site at the time of the explosion. No single person was injured. The paper-making machines at the plant too were unaffected.

Immediately after the explosion, the company had declared that it would be forced to reduce the employee strength at the mill over time. The first reorganization of staff was announced in July this year, in which 59 employees were laid off. The recent lay off too is part of the mill’s long-term restructuring plans.

Announcing the decision, Jay Thiessen, Mill Manager stated that the reductions are an unfortunate consequence of an unexpected event. The company will offer support to the affected workers, by providing them with necessary compensation, benefits and job placement assistance. The mill continues to operate its two paper machines, producing specialty products, he added.
