Japan's Largest Steelmaker Announces Opening of New Shelbyville Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nippon Steel & Sumikin Cold Heading Wire Indiana Inc.-subsidiary of Japan’s largest steel manufacturer, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) has scheduled the ribbon cutting ceremony on the new Shelbyville plant on Wednesday. The ceremony will be attended by Governor Eric Holcomb and other government officials along with top company executives.

The company had made the first announcement with regards to the new facility in June 2016. At the time of breaking ground for the new facility at 400 Northbrook Drive, adjacent to its Indiana Precision Forge facility, the company had announced that the facility will be fully operational by the spring of 2018.

The 150,000 square-foot facility is the first U.S. production facility for NSSMC Bar & Wire Rod Unit. Incidentally, this is NSSMC’s sixth investment in Indiana. The facility will process cold heading steel wires that are mainly used for fastening applications by automotive industry. The high quality steel wires generated by the plant will be used to produce nuts, bolts and other fasteners to be used in vehicles. The plant has annual production capacity of around 39,000 metric tons and is expected to serve automobile manufacturers across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

The company has invested nearly $50 million in bringing up the new facility, which is expected to create around 70 jobs by 2021. It received up to $475,000 in conditional tax credits from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. (IEDC) and up to $140,000 in training grants. It has already hired 37 full-time employees for various positions in administration, customer service, sales and manufacturing.
