SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The 2021 Economic Impact Study report published by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) highlights the importance of U.S. recycling industry.

According to the report, the U.S. recycling industry is not only a thriving economic engine, but also a fundamental player in environmental protection, resource conservation, and sustainability. The industry recycles an average of 130 million metric tons of materials every year, although the recycling volumes were significantly impacted in 2020 due to recession induced by Covid-19 pandemic.

The industry plays a prominent role as job creator. In 2021, a total of 159,640 jobs are being directly supported by processing and brokerage operations of the recycling industry in the U.S. These jobs pay an average of $77,300 in wages and benefits to American workers. In addition, it also supports 346,999 indirect jobs.

The industry generates far-reaching economic benefits. The industry activities generate approximately $116.84 billion per annum in economic benefits locally. It generates substantial revenues for federal, state and local governments. Also, exports account for 31.26% of the industry’s economic activity and are responsible for creation of nearly 155,662 jobs.
