International Council Backs Global Treaty to Eliminate Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The members of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) participated in the first meeting of the International Negotiation Committee (INC-1), which has been tasked with creation of a global agreement on plastics. The meeting was recently held in Punta Del Este, Uruguay.

The meeting held several rounds of deliberations on scaling up of a circular economy for plastics, designing products based on the circularity theme and enhancing transparency on chemical additives. It also called for effective partnership between the private and public sector enterprises, so as to boost waste management techniques.

The industry has been witnessing increased investments in recycling infrastructure and modern designing techniques to enhance product recyclability. The proposed global treaty will provide further boost to these efforts by reducing barriers to technology and expertise required for transition to circularity. The Council expressed the hope that the agreement could act as an effective tool in accelerating circularity and eliminating plastic waste.

ICCA congratulated the United Nations (UN) and the government of Uruguay for hosting the meeting, which delivered on its promise to keep plastics in the economy, rather than in the environment.

Meantime, the participants of the meeting raised concerns about chemical additives in plastics, calling for improved transparency of additives used in plastics.
