Interfor Corp. Resumes Operations at Flood-Hit B.C. Sawmill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Vancouver, B.C.-based Interfor Corp. has announced that it has restarted operations at its Grand Forks, B.C. saw mill following temporary closure for almost two weeks on account of devastating floods in the region. The escalating flooding in the region had forced Interfor Corp. to temporarily curtail the operations at the saw mill with effect from May 10, 2018.

Andrew Horahan, Vice President-Western Operations of Interfor Corp. noted that the mill personnel had undertaken a series of measures to protect the mill operations against potential damage. Such actions have limited the risk to mill infrastructure and equipment. The hard work of the employees has helped the company to resume operations immediately after water levels receded from the region. Further, he appreciated the commitment of employees and thanked the City of Grand Forks for its ongoing support.

It is not certain whether the company will be able to operate at normal pace, mainly due to the damages caused by floods to rail lines, which may take some time to get repaired completely. Meantime, the company will work closely with its carriers and customers to minimize the impacts of logistics related issues. It must be noted that the saw mill was not in operation for almost two weeks, as it was not accessible by road.

Interfor had set a great example by announcing financial support to its employees during difficult times. The company had announced its commitment to pay all hourly mill employees of the Grand Forks saw mill 40 hours per week of straight time effective from the day of closure of the mill.

The Grand Forks saw mill is one of the two sawmills in the Kootenay region, the other one being Castlegar. Altogether, Interfor operates 18 world-class mills and 3 quality woodlands in communities throughout North America.
