Ineos and Trinseo Advanced Plans to Build New Polystyrene Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Frankfurt, Germany-headquartered Ineos Styrolution and Pennsylvania-based Trinseo advanced their plans to build a new polystyrene recycling plant in northern France. The commercial production at the plant is expected to commence by 2023, said the joint news release. The facility will have capacity to process up to 50 tons per day of postconsumer polystyrene feedstock.

The plant will employ latest depolymerisation technology, by which polystyrene food packaging scrap will be converted back to its original liquid monomer, which in turn will be repolymerized into recycled polystyrene. This could be used for various applications including food-contact applications. The companies are currently evaluating technologies offered by Agilyx and Recycling Technologies.

Nicolas Joly, vice president of Plastics & Feedstocks at Trinseo commented that it is excited to move into the next phase of engineering for the plant, which it expects will bring about revolutionary changes in polystyrene recycling. Meantime, Sven Riechers at Ineos Styrolution said that the collaboration is a significant commitment to close the loop with food-grade recycled content. It is part of the joint commitment to ensure at least 30% recycled content in polystyrene packaging products in Europe by 2025.
