Industry Body Highlights Notable Progress in Sustainability Goals

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) announced publication of 2020 Responsible Care Report, which highlights the progress by its members towards sustainability goals. The report highlights the industry’s efforts to uphold safety, while continuing to deliver on emission reductions and social commitments, especially in the midst of extreme challenges and uncertainties posed by the Covid-19 global pandemic.

According to the report, CIAC members achieved reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 13%, since 2005.  The sulphur dioxide emissions have witnessed a decline by 71%. The various commitments under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act have helped in reducing emissions of substances requiring risk management by 13%. The CIAC members continued to work with communities to educate them on the risks as well as benefits of operations and products.

Compared to 2015, the total recordable incident rate has dropped by 55%, with virtually no large-scale incidents being reported.

Since 2012, CIAC members have reduced routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste for disposal by 66% and 46% respectively. The report also cited 124% reduction in water consumption by members.
