Industry Alliance Heralds $1 Billion Commitment to Tackle Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A group of around 30 companies, including several companies from the plastics industry, has joined together to form a new alliance aimed at tackling plastic pollution. The members of the new ‘Alliance to End Plastic Waste’ have already committed a sum of $1 billion to work towards this aim. Over the next five years, the alliance plans to raise the total commitment to $1.5 billion.

According to joint announcement by the companies, the new alliance will focus on large urban areas which are found to lack adequate infrastructure facilities to manage plastic waste. The primary focus area will be rivers, which are believed to be the major transporter of plastic waste from land to ocean. Incidentally, rivers in Southeast Asian region are being identified as the major contributors to ocean plastic problem. Studies indicate that nearly 55-60% of the world’s plastic pollution originates from five countries in this region- China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The nonprofit group will design solutions that can be applied in regions with high plastic leakage. In addition, it will also partner with Circulate Capital in setting up an incubator network, collaborate with the United Nations Environment and support the Renew Oceans programs run by Renewology. Further, it will also work towards designing integrated waste management systems and creating comprehensive information project to support global waste management projects.
