SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent technical seminar moderated by ICT Chair Emma Hudson highlighted the progress of the ReCollect project for end-of-life Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) launched by Jiva Materials.
According to Hudson, approximately 32% of all e-waste comprised of small domestic equipment. The currently available recycling techniques for recovery of precious metals are mainly focussed on shredding and incineration. The ReCollect project was aimed at developing an alternative method to manage end-of-life PCBs by removing difficult-to-recycle fibreglass-epoxy PCBs.

The project mainly targeted white goods and domestic appliance sector, the manufacturers of which already had successful recovery schemes in place, thus enabling removal and recycling of PCBs made on the new substrate. Jiva’s patented solution delivered substantially higher yields in recovery of precious metals, at a much reduced carbon footprint. The project mainly focused on demonstrating the feasibility of producing huge volumes of PCB substrate within the UK, in addition to ensuring its compatibility with existing aqueous fabrication processes.
Jack Herring, CEO, Jiva Materials reminded that it is time to take responsibility of the electronics items and their impacts on the planet.
