Greeners Action Calls for Higher Levy on Plastic Bags

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Greeners Action, a leading environmental group in Hong Kong has called upon government authorities to increase the levy on plastic bags distributed at counters to at least HK$2. Currently, customers are charged 50 cents per plastic shopping bag. A recent survey conducted by the group had pointed to increased use of plastic bags by customers.

The supermarkets were found to have handed out approximately over 170 million such bags during the previous year. Although the consumption of plastic bags witnessed 80% decline in the first year following the introduction of the 50 cents levy, it has rebounded since then.

The proposal comes ahead of the upcoming Legislative Council meeting to discuss the proposal to double the levy on plastic bags to HK$1. It must be noted that the Environment and Ecology Bureau had advised the government in April to increase the levy to HK$1 or HK$2.

The survey had revealed that some supermarkets indiscriminately distributed plastic bags to customers without charging levy from them. Almost three-fourths of the survey participants noted that the current levy must be increased to at least HK$2 so as to discourage consumers from using plastic bags. Surprisingly, nearly 41% of the respondents were of the view that the levy must be increased to HK$5.
