Green Bay Paper Mill Celebrates Key Environmental Milestone

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Wisconsin-headquartered Green Bay Packaging, Inc. has confirmed that the construction of its $500 million paper mill on North Quincy Street is on schedule and is expected to open by first quarter 2021. The project was announced in June and construction had started in August last year.

On Monday, the company celebrated an important environmental milestone by turning off its final coal boiler, a move that is expected to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter. The entire plant now runs on natural gas.

The update states that more than half of the engineering and design work has been completed. Steel erection works are still to be completed. The installation of paper machine and other equipment at the facility will be carried out as construction and steel erection works progress.

Bryan Hollenbach, the company's executive vice president noted that the company achieved the major milestone, exactly on the same day as it had planned. Along with transition to natural gas, the mill’s construction and hiring process are both ahead of schedules. The company is confident of exceeding its commitment, Hollenbach said.
