Global Refined Lead Market Hit Modest Deficit in 2018

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) announced publication of preliminary data for world lead supply and demand trends during the entire year 2018. The refined lead metal demand outclassed supply, thereby resulting in a deficit market. The lead market deficit stood at 98kt during the previous year.

The lead mine production totaled 4.655 million tonnes in 2018, falling marginally by just over 1% over the prior year. The mine production had totaled 4.710 million tonnes in 2017. China, after posting 3.2% decline in mine output in 2017, recorded further decline of 3.4% in 2018. The other countries to report reduced mine output were Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru and the U.S. These reductions were partially offset by production jumps reported in other countries such as Turkey, India, Cuba, Australia and a few countries in the European region.

The world refined lead metal production grew slightly by 0.6% in 2018. The increased production in Australia, India and the U.S. more than offset production declines in Europe, Canada and China. The refined metal production from recycled raw material accounted for 62.5% of global output in 2018.

According to ILZSG, the global refined lead metal usage registered nominal growth by 0.2% in 2018. The usage reported robust growth of 8.3% in India. The Chinese usage too was up marginally by 0.8%. However, several counties including Mexico, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the U.S. reported output declines. The European demand continued to remain stable during the previous year.

The Dec ’18 refined lead metal usage at 1.096 million tonnes outclassed the production of 1.081 million tonnes during the month.
