Global Recycling Day to Promote Recycling as the 'Seventh Resource'

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has announced that it has planned a series of events in connection with the first ever Global Recycling Day which falls on March 18th.

The world recycling body has decided to spread awareness among global countries and population on the relevance of recycling as a seventh resource in addition to the existing six permanent natural resources-water, air, oil, natural gas, coal and minerals. The above resources are finite and have been consumed for several years now. However, the recyclable goods can be used time and again.

Ranjit Baxi, President of BIR called upon world leaders to take bold steps to demonstrate the power of items that we discard and recycle in combating climate change. In addition to supplying 40% of world’s entire raw materials need, it also provides well-paid job opportunities to millions of people around the world. As per estimates, the world-wide recycling industry employs nearly 1.6 billion people. Recycling has a significant role to play in combating climate change as it leads to savings of approximately 700 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

As part of the celebrations, nine cities across the world- London, Paris, Brussels, Sao Paolo, Washington DC, Sydney, Delhi, Dubai and Johannesburg will announce their plans to encourage people to think of recycling in a new way. People across the globe could become part of the campaign by making key recycling commitments and sharing their pledges on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #GlobalRecyclingDay.

The Global Recycling Day reminds of seven commitments- Be single-use-plastic aware – reduce and recycle; Learn, and follow, local recycling regulations; Prevent contamination of recyclable materials; Mend, repair and reuse; Be a recycling-aware shopper; Make the effort to recycle electronics and Reduce our individual waste-footprint.
