SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Ghana has announced launch of second phase of the Sustainable Recycling Industries Project (SRI). The official launch was marked by a ceremony held in Accra-the capital city on March 5, 2020.

The second phase, with support from Switzerland, will run for a period of four years. The government of Switzerland has already committed EUR 6.1 million to the nationwide initiative that aims to strengthen the country’s e-waste collection and treatment capacities. It must be noted that the first phase of the program had run for a period of four years from 2015 to 2018. The first phase of SRI had been successful in addressing the problem of rising e-waste in the country.

The second phase of the program will focus on imparting necessary knowledge to informal recyclers on extracting copper from ole electronic devices without burning them. Further, it will raise awareness among producers and importers of electronic devices on sustainable management of e-waste.

Incidentally, the Agbogbloshie landfill in Accra is considered as the most polluted region in the world. In addition to locally collected e-waste, the region is a dump yard for world’s electronic waste.
