Georgia's Phased Ban on Plastic Bags Goes Into Effect October 1

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The gradual ban imposed on single-use plastic bags came into effect in Georgia beginning October 1, 2018. Effective that day, import, production and sale of plastic bags with thickness less than 15 microns is being prohibited. Incidentally, such bags account for nearly 40% of the bags consumed in the country. The decree signed in September permits the use of only biodegradable and compostable bags. The ban is part of the government’s efforts to protect its environment.

According to Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, the initial phase of the ban must be considered as the first major step on its path towards a greener economy. The ban on plastics, which pollutes the environment the most, will help the country to reduce the negative impacts on nature. As per estimates, every Georgian citizen discards an average of 525 single-use plastic bags each year.

Starting April 1, 2019, import, production and sale of all types of plastic bags will be prohibited. Only biodegradable alternatives that are safe for environment will be allowed. The bags must carry clear inscriptions proving that they are 100% biodegradable and compostable. It must also have manufacturer details in addition to details regarding composition and thickness. Violators of the law will be liable to pay starting from $190.

The various environmentalist groups across the country have welcomed the ban, whereas it raised severe protests from customers as well as producers of plastic bags.
