SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Georgia-Pacific (GP), in a recent company release, has outlined amazing facts about its newest lumber mill facility in Talladega, Alabama. The mill, announced in 2017, took approximately 9 months to construct at an investment of around $100 million. Earlier this month, the company had announced official start of production, at a dedication ceremony held on the facility’s grounds.

According to press release, the Talladega facility is 300,000 square feet in size, which is sufficiently big enough to hold two football fields. However, despite the huge size, it is expected to deliver 25-44% improvement in electrical usage when compared with older mills. Also, the three kiln lines at the facility are expected to be 25-30% more energy-efficient. In addition, it also comprises of an extremely large warehouse facility which is capable to hold up to 4 million feet of lumber.

The new lumber mill in Talladega has a production capacity of approximately 300 million board feet of lumber per year, adequately enough to build more than 20,000 homes of average size in a year. The facility is expected to ship out substantial volumes of lumber, nearly 50 truckloads of lumber every single day.

The new lumber mill supports more than 120 full-time jobs. The company now accounts for more than 50% of the total workforce in entire Talladega, Alabama. With this, the company now has a total of eight facilities in the state of Alabama. Georgia Pacific currently employs nearly 2,300 people across all its Alabama facilities.
