Fire-Hit Alberta Wood Pellet Plant Declares Partial Restart of Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pinnacle Renewable Energy announced that the operations at its wood pellet production facility in Entwistle, Alberta will resume partially in March this year. The operations at the facility were temporarily suspended following a fire, which damaged part of the facility.

According to company press release, dry fibre production at the facility will resume next month. The schedule for full production will be announced at a later date, upon completion of investigation into the fire incident. Further, the press release noted that a total of 12 workers comprising of 6 employees and 6 contractors were injured. Most of the injuries were minor, but one of the contractors is still undergoing treatment in Edmonton hospital, it said.

The fire incident took place approximately 2’o clock MST 11th February, 2019, causing severe damage to the dryer area of the plant. Several employees were treated on site, whereas one contractor worker was airlifted in critical condition to nearby hospital. Emergency personnel were notified immediately. Around 40 firefighters from Yellowhead and Parkland Counties attended to the fire. Following this, the Occupational health and Safety issued a stop work order. The OHS and Parkland County Fire Department ordered investigation into the incident.

The temporary shutdown had affected nearly 70 workers at the plant.

The Entwistle, Alberta wood pellet plant was officially opened in September last year.
