U.S. Exports of Aluminum Scrap Surged 20%

The imports of aluminum waste and scrap by the U.S recorded marginal decline by nearly 2% over the previous year to total $329.1 million during Jan-Apr ’18 this year.

U.S. Exports of Aluminum Scrap Surged 20%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests notable surge in exports of Aluminum Waste and Scrap by the country during the first four months of the current year.

The exports during the period from January to April in 2018 surged higher by 20% to total $805.67 million. The exports during the corresponding four-month period in 2017 had totaled only $668.92 million. The country had exported $2.25 billion worth of aluminum waste and scrap during the entire year 2017.

In spite of rigorous control on imports by Chinese Customs authorities, China continued to be the largest importer of aluminum waste and scrap from the U.S. The exports to China totaled $373.35 million, accounting for nearly 46% of the total U.S. exports. The shipments to China registered nearly 6% jump, upon comparison with the previous year. The U.S. exports to South Korea totaled $101.54 million during the first four months of 2018. In third place was Canada with imports totaling $67.64 million. The other primary export destinations were India ($59.65 million), Mexico ($58.55 million) and Malaysia ($40.14 million).

The combined exports to the top five foreign markets totaled $660.73 million, accounting for just over 82% of the total exports.

Meantime, the imports of aluminum waste and scrap by the U.S recorded marginal decline by nearly 2% over the previous year to total $329.1 million during Jan-Apr ’18 this year. The imports had totaled $334.76 million during the corresponding period last year.

The primary source of imports was Canada. The country supplied $198.53 million worth of aluminum waste and scrap during Jan-Apr ’18, accounting for more than 60% of the total imports by the U.S. The other main suppliers were Mexico ($83.15 million), Guatemala ($6.75 million), Venezuela ($3.77 million) and Spain ($3.32 million). The top two exporters-Canada and Mexico reported jump in export volumes of aluminum waste and scrap to the U.S.
