Explosion at Androscoggin Mill in Jay Comes Under Investigation

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The state and federal investigators have begun investigations to find the cause of massive explosion that took place last week at Pixelle Specialty Solutions’ Androscoggin Mill in Jay.

The investigation is being led by an expert team comprising of investigators from the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It started with a first look at the accident spot and subsequent interviewing of site workers. The investigation is expected to uncover the exact reason for the explosion, which had resulted in significant damage.

Meantime, company officials noted that the mill will be unable to commence pulp production for some time. The company is not in a position to comment on exact timing of restart of any portion of the mill. However, it plans to resume operations of paper machine as soon as possible. It must be noted that the paper machines which produce range of specialty paper were not damaged in the explosion.

An explosion that took place in the digester part of the mill last Wednesday had sent debris and slurry of chemicals on to nearby cars and buildings. Nearly 200 out of the total 500 workers were at site during the incident. No injuries were reported.
