SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pennsylvania-headquartered e-scrap processor Owl Electronic Recycling considers further expansion of its e-plastics processing facility. The company announced its intentions to enter into a joint-venture partnership deal with a large partner, such as an OEM, in order to start additional domestic facilities.
According to Jason Wen, founder, the company has been receiving several enquiries about its e-plastics capabilities, especially from local recyclers, who are reportedly struggling to export e-plastics. The recently introduced Basel Convention amendment has led to further disruption in movement of e-plastics, thus boosting the demand for local processing. It must be noted that the company had installed the processing facility in 2018 and has been processing materials since then.
Until 2018, Owl Electronic Recycling had been shipping recovered e-plastics from low-grade electronics to China from its Augusta, Ga. facility. With China imposing ban on unprocessed plastic scrap, the company moved to an industrial location in Pennsylvania. It purchased new equipment, installed optical sorting and X-ray detection equipment and brought in electrostatic separation technology and color sensor equipment.
Owl Electronic Recycling’s e-plastics processing capacity is estimated at around 20,000 tons per year.
