EuRIC Raises Concerns That Green Deal May Lead to Scrap Export Ban

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) expressed concerns over the European Commission’s newly proposed European Green Deal that is aimed at making Europe carbon neutral by 2050.

Julia Blees, senior policy officer for EuRIC, during the Bureau of International Recycling’s online convention noted that recyclers in the region are sceptical about the deal recognizing the export of processed scrap materials to non-EU markets. They fear that the deal could even result in a ban on the export of recycled materials.

The review could lead to legislative proposals to ensure ease of trade within the EU internal market. It aims to restrict waste exports to third world countries. The third objective is to prevent illegal shipment of waste to other countries.

EuRIC highlighted the need for drawing a clear distinction between processed and unprocessed waste. The regulatory measures should ensure that the exported waste is treated to high environmental standards. For this, it proposes setting up of an agency to confirm the standards of facilities in these countries that receive the exported scrap.

The exports of processed waste to third countries should not be abolished, as it is critical to the region’s business, said Blees. At the same time, the Confederation is in support of all efforts to crack down on illegal shipments, Blees added.
