ERI Expands AI-Driven Robotics Technology to Process E-Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fresno, California-headquartered electronics recycling service provider ERI announced its decision to leverage advancements in technology to effectively address the issue of rising e-waste volumes.

The company had installed an artificial intelligence- (AI-) driven Super Automated Machine (SAM) sorting robot at its Fresno plant during 2019. Following its success, the company equipped the Plainfield, Indiana, plant with the same technology. It plans to deploy SAM at all of its remaining six other locations over the next two years, said John Shegerian, Executive Chairman, ERI.

SAM separates shredded material, such as aluminum, PCBs, yellow brass, capacitors and copper products, into different material streams. The vision system makes use of a robotic arm to pick up the desired material. SAM is said to be capable of performing nearly 70 picks per minute and processing up to 10 different streams of shredded material.

In addition to SAM, ERI also uses a robotic flat panel display processor named ERNIE, capable of shredding 5,000 pounds of flat-screen TVs and monitors per hour in a controlled environment.

Both SAM and ERNIE were developed in partnership with Denver-based Amp Robotics. The combination of technologies has helped ERI to deliver significant improvement to its e-scrap processing.
