SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Emirates Steel Arkan announced that it has partnered with renewable energy company Masdar on a pilot green hydrogen project aimed at decarbonizing UAE’s steel sector. This is the first-of-its-kind project in the entire Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The project is currently in its installation phase at Emirates Steel Arkan’s production facilities in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi. The project, that replaces natural gas with green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore, is expected to be commissioned by early next year. The electrolyzers used to produce green hydrogen have already been delivered to the site, the company noted.

Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO, Emirates Steel Arkan commented that the company is delighted to partner with Masdar to achieve its ambitious decarbonizartion roadmap. The project represents a major milestone in the company’s commitment to realize its sustainability objectives. The move will spearhead the industry’s shift towards a sustainable future, he added.
Meantime, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar stated that the company will continue to harness the power of innovation and partnership in order to deliver a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
