Egypt launches first e-waste recycling factory

CAIRO (Scrap Monster) : According to official statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the country has launched its first e-waste recycling facility at the industrial city area of the 6th of October city in the urban area of Cairo. The International Technology Group (ITG) factory was inaugurated by The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Atef Helmy and the Minister of State for Environmental Affairs (MSEA), Leila Iskandar.

The factory will recycle a wide range of electronic and electrical equipment including laptops, mobile devices, printers, network devices, cables, faxes and photocopiers. The project also aims to extract copper, gold, silver, platinum, iron, aluminum, tin, plastic and other precious metals out of the discarded resources. The recycling factory is said to have incorporated most modern techniques to ensure safe and healthy electronic waste recycling.

The factory is expected to provide training and job opportunities to several youth. It is expected that the factory would create nearly 1,250 jobs, direct or indirect, by next year end.
