SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world’s leading packaging producer DS Smith announced that it has launched a new program in collaboration with schools in Romania to help the country meet its recycling goal.
As part of its Now & Next Sustainability Strategy, the company’s Zarnesti paper mill will promote circular economy by working with local school children. It must be noted that the European Commission report had warned that Romania is likely to fall short of its recycling targets, despite marginal improvement in recent years. The authorities have been trying hard to boost the recycling rates by implementing several measures including imposition of higher tax for waste material ending up in landfills and implementation of tax on non-reusable packaging.

Through its partnership with Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the company aims to engage 5 million students on the circular economy and circular lifestyles by 2030. DS Smith will organize outreach programmes, using both online and face-to-face platforms, aimed at educating children on sustainability practices, recycling and circular economy. To this effect, it has already developed an educational programme in partnership with Brasov County School Inspectorate.
Nearly 200 children have already benefited from circular lesson plans, said the company press release.
