DS Smith Offers Top Tips to Overcome Hurdles in Paper Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  With paper and cardboard waste at households expected to increase over the festive season, packaging leader DS Smith has come up with top tips to counter paper waste.

The first and foremost hurdle is the sporadic increase in cardboard volumes at homes, mainly due to recent growth of online shopping. Secondly, the possible disruptions to kerbside collection services on account of adverse weather conditions could lead to accrual of waste at homes. The huge rise in volume of diverse forms of cardboard and paper will in turn elevate the contamination rate.

To overcome the above hurdles, residents need to ensure that all recyclable paper and cardboard are sent to correct recycling bins. Residents should be educated properly on what materials can and can’t go to their recycling bins. Instead of relying fully on kerbside collections, residents are advised to take the unwanted box and paper to the nearest waste recycling center.

Mat Prosser, UK Managing Director, DS Smith advises residents to strip wrapping paper, if any, before placing in the recycling bin. Also, citizens must try to avoid buying glittery papers as they are not recyclable. Also, presence of metallic-based glitters could contaminate entire batches of recycled paper. One should also look out for cards that contain lamination or thin plastic layers on them. By following the above tips, one could ensure that the recycled collection remains uncontaminated.
