SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global packaging major DS Smith announced that it has achieved first sustainability target by tackling ‘water stress’ at sites in those regions with deteriorating quantity and quality of water. This is an important milestone in the company’s Now and Next Sustainability Strategy. The company successfully identified the sites located in ‘water stressed’ areas and introduced specific plans to mitigate the use of water in those sites.
According to the company, over-demand, over-use and rationing could result in ‘water stress’ situation. Several researches have already predicted that ‘water stress’ crisis is likely to increase over the coming years.
The company addressed the challenge by using resources from two respected organizations. Firstly, it made use of World Resources Institute (WRI) Aqueduct tool to identify which of the company sites would be water-stressed areas by 2030. Also, the company formulated a comprehensive ‘water stress’ risk mitigation plan in partnership with non profit charity CDP that runs a global disclosure system towards management of environmental impacts.
Ian Silcox-Crowe, Sustainability Business Partner at DS Smith noted that the plans focus on water re-circulation and efficiency, which in turn will help the company to reduce its reliance on water abstracted from the natural environment, thus lessening the overall environmental impact.
