SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major DS Smith announced that it has donated 50,000 euros to UNICEF to fund the organization’s innovative plastics recycling project in the African nation of Ivory Coast. The UNICEF project collects plastic waste and processes them into bricks, which in turn are used to build new schooling facilities for children.
In addition to reducing plastic waste, the project also helps in creation of school rooms, thereby offering better opportunities for education. Incidentally, schools in Ivory Coast lack enough classrooms. Overcrowded classrooms are seen impacting children’s education opportunities. Also, the project involves local population in collection of plastic waste. The proceeds from waste collection help in improving the living conditions of poor families.
The donation, via the DS Smith Charitable Foundation, was made through a cheque, which was handed over to UNICEF working group representatives by Anja Röhrle, Marketing & Communication Manager, and Philip Bautil, Managing Director.
Philip Bautil, Managing Director at DS Smith noted that the company has been actively involved in several projects aimed at replacing plastics with alternative solutions including corrugated cardboard. Since 2014, the company has made a donation of 300,000 euros via the DS Smith Charitable Foundation to ensure better future opportunities for children, he added.
