Drastic Fall in Sales of Electronic Devices to Significantly Reduce E-Waste Volumes

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The UN researchers cited huge decline in sales of electronics items due to Covid-19 pandemic. This could potentially lead to reduced volume of electronic waste, they noted.

There was an increased demand for devices such as laptops and game consoles, mainly driven by the switch to Work from Home (WFH) culture and the rising demand for entertainment during isolation and quarantine. Despite this, the global sales of electronic devices recorded decline by 6.4% during the initial nine-month period last year, when compared with the corresponding period in 2019.

The UN report states that the electronics sales were down by almost 30% year-on-year in low and middle income countries, whereas those in high-income countries dropped only by 5%. This indicates that the coronavirus pandemic impacted quality of life, mainly in poorer countries of the world. The substantial dip in overall sales translates to 4.9 million tonnes less electronics waste being generated during this period.

According to Kees Balde, co-author of the report, the world is now staring at a bigger problem, as the sales are expected to witness huge rebound upon lifting of pandemic-related lockdowns and other restrictions. This may result in mountains of e-waste. It must be noted that the global e-waste generation had totalled 53.6 million tonnes in 2019.
