Dow to Invest in Boosting Circular Economy for Plastics in Africa

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Dow announced investment in Kenya-based recycling company, Mr. Green Africa, aimed at accelerating a circular economy for plastics in Africa. The investment is part of Mr. Green Africa’s Series B fundraising round and is expected to generate around 200 direct jobs.

The first of its kind investment by Dow in Africa will work towards addressing critical gaps in waste management systems, thus enabling more volumes of plastic waste to be collected, sorted and reused in new applications. It will help divert plastic waste from informal dumpsites and the environment.

The partnership targets to recover approximately 90 kilotons of plastic waste over the next four year period. With the support from Dow, the Kenya-headquartered recycling company plans to expand its operations there as well as in other African countries. Additionally, the joint venture targets to develop high-quality post-consumer recyclate (PCR), which in turn will be used to produce new flexible plastic packaging.

Marco ten Bruggencate, Commercial Vice President for Packaging and Specialty Plastics for EMEA, Dow noted that the partnership with Mr. Green Africa demonstrates the company’s commitment to play a vital part in solving the plastics waste issue in Africa.
