Domtar Corp. completes multi-million dollar acquisition of Missouri-based HDIS

FORT MILL (Scrap Monster): Domtar Corporation today announced completion of purchase of Missouri-based Home Delivery Incontinent Supplies Co. (“HDIS”). HDIS is a provider of adult incontinence and related products. The acquisition follows a definitive agreement reached between the companies during mid-August this year. The deal is valued at approximately $55 million, sources said.

Domtar had announced the deal to buy HDIS on August 18th. The deal covers HDIS’s Olivette, Mo. headquarters and distribution center and two retail locations. Michael Fagan, president of the Domtar Personal Care division had stated that the acquisition of HDIS quality service division is a good fit and that it would provide big boost to Domtar’s growth strategy. Fagen stated that HDIS’s direct-to-consumer business would henceforth be part of Domtar’s Personal Care division based in Raleigh.

The company has transformed itself from papermaker into fiber innovator through several key acquisitions over the past few years. In 2012, the company had purchased Attends Europe. It had acquired Associated Hygienic Products (AHP), leading US infant diapers manufacturer in 2013. During early-2014, Domtar had acquired Indas-Spain’s largest branded adult incontinence (AI) products manufacturer. In Q2 this year, the company had acquired the assets of Butterfly Health Inc. for an undisclosed amount, thereby expanding the product portfolio of the company’s Personal Care segment.

The company’s Personal Care Division currently employs nearly 2,000 employees around the globe. The Division has six facilities located in Greenville, NC; Jesup, GA; elaware, OH; Waco, TX; Aneby, Sweden; Toledo, Spain. The facilities have combined manufacturing space of over 7,000 square feet. The research and development activities for Domtar Personal Care are centralized in the Divisional Head Office in Raleigh, North Carolina, while R&D activities undertaken for EAM customers are conducted at its Jesup, Georgia operation.

Domtar had recently announced plans to streamline operations at its Plymouth mill in North Carolina, in a bid to consolidate its position in global fluff pulp market by improving its profitability. As part of the restructuring process, it had decided to close the 90,000 tpy pulp line and idle all related assets, thereby leading to workforce reduction of nearly 100 employees. The company press release had noted that the entire restructuring process is expected to get completed by mid-2017, resulting in anticipated production of 380,000 tpy of fluff pulp.
