DoE Orders Shutdown of Paper Mill Operations on Pollution Charges

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The environment authorities in Bangladesh have ordered suspension of operations of a paper mill, following allegations of toxic discharge into water bodies. The Department of Environment (DoE) Chittagong region has ordered suspension of operations at Chittagong Asian Paper Mills (Pvt) Ltd.- a sister concern of Asian and DAF Group, located at Nondirhat area of Hathazari upazila in the district.

The order was passed by DoE Chittagong Office Director Azadur Rahman Mollick during a hearing held Sunday at its office. The order states that operations of the mill must have to be shut immediately. This follows the findings by authorities that the mill discharged untreated toxic waste into a waterbody connected to the Halda river.

According to DoE officials, the paper mill has been served with showcause notices and fines before as well. However, this time, the sludge kept under the open sky was washed away with rain water, which ultimately polluted the river through a bypass.

The plant has been ordered not to resume operation until installation of proper waste disposal system, necessary amendment of the faulty Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), implementation of active round-the-clock ETP and setting up of new mechanism for sludge disposal without causing environmental harms. Meantime, the mill authorities promised that they will try their best to comply with all environmental rules and regulations so as to ensure that Halda river does not get polluted.
